TEFL Resources: Knowing the Cambridge English Exams

The available jobs in the Spanish market have been declining. As of lately, the competition for jobs has increased due to the current market for English speakers. It has now even become a requirement for a candidate for a job to have at least a basic knowledge of the English language.

There are two options to prove your knowledge of the English language. The first option is through an interview and the second is by having an official certification that recognizes your level of English. Among the most requested certifications are the TOEFL (American) TOEIC (American) IELTS, TRINITY (English) and above all, the Cambridge English exams (FCE, CAE, PET, and Proficiency).

Important Exams to Know PET: Preliminary English Test The Preliminary English Test is an accredited way to exemplify any language skills that can be used for work, study, or travel. The Preliminary English Test uses topics and content that is used in the English language. You can take Cambridge English: Preliminary as a paper-based or computer-based test.

The Exam Format

  • Reading and Writing (1 hour 30 minutes)
  • Listening (35 minutes)
  • Speaking (10-12 minutes)

 FCE: First Certificate in English Cambridge English: First is for those who have B2/upper-immediate level of English. This exam is recognized as proof that you can use everyday written and spoken English for work or study purposes. The FEC assessment demonstrates extensive research that has been conducted to create the fairest and most accurate test results.

The Exam Format

  • Reading (1 hour 15 minutes)
  • Writing (1 hour 20 minutes)
  • Listening (40 minutes)
  • Speaking (approx 14 minutes)

CAE: Cambridge English: Advanced Cambridge English: Advanced is for students with a C1 level of English. This particular exam is accepted by universities, employers and government departments worldwide as an indication that you have a large amount of knowledge of the English language. Preparing for CAE exam helps learners develop the skills that are necessary to make the most of studying, working and living in English-speaking countries.

  • Listening (40 minutes)
  • Speaking (approx 15 minutes)

 CPE: Cambridge English: Proficiency  This exam is for those with a level of C2 in English. The C2 level is the highest level there is as stated by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The exam is designed to be fair to people of all nationalities and linguistic backgrounds. The exam covers all of the four important language skills such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

  • Writing (1 hour 30 minutes)
  • Listening (40 minutes)
  • Speaking (approx 16 minutes)
